HIV / AIDS

Individuals engaging in high-risk behaviors for contracting HIV are an important focus of Okanogan County Public Health’s HIV/AIDS program. The program offers HIV education, outreach, testing, case management and referral services, partner notification.

Education

A variety of educational brochures and presentations about HIV/AIDS are offered to schools, drug and alcohol treatment centers, professional audiences and others interested in the facts about the disease, treatment and available resources. Education about Hepatitis C, a blood-borne communicable disease, is also available. Call (509) 422-7153.

 

Case Management

Case managers provide support and referral services to individuals infected with HIV/AIDS, regardless of income. Clients are assisted with referrals to health care specialists, support groups and help finding medical insurance and housing. Call (509)422-7153

 

HIV Testing and Counseling

A core public health function, HIV testing is offered by HIV/AIDS program professionals at:
 

  • Okanogan County Public Health office – 1234 South 2nd Avenue – anonymous testing offered to the general public (client is never required to submit any identifying information including name).  Call (509)422-7153
     
  • Okanogan County jail and juvenile detention (contracted service)

     

Counseling is always provided prior to the test and after the test results are provided. If test results are negative, client is educated about ways to reduce the risk of contracting HIV. If the test results are positive, client is referred to Public Health case management and partner notification services.

 

Outreach

The HIV/AIDS program works to prevent or reduce behaviors that transmit HIV through community outreach services to individuals at highest risk for contracting HIV – injection drug users, men having sex with men (MSM), and individuals engaging in unprotected sex with HIV+ persons. Outreach services include:
 

  • Condom distribution – thousands of free condoms are distributed each year throughout Okanogan County
     
  • Referral and education – public health professionals are continuously educating clients about HIV/AIDS and frequently make referrals to other community service programs, housing resources, support groups.
